It’s time to REdiscover!

March 4, 2010

Ever felt distant from God? Felt that even when you do want to experience Christ, you couldn’t pull your Bible off the shelf? Man, I’ve been there… many times.

Christian singer-songwriter Sara Groves sings about this in a song entitled “The Word.”

I’ve done every devotional
Been every place emotional
Trying to hear a new word from God
And I think it’s very odd
That while I attempt to help myself
My Bible sits upon my shelf
With every promise I could ever need

So she then sings that “the Word was, the Word is, and the Word will be.” We try so hard to fulfill our lives with many things, embracing and throwing away things we feel meet or don’t meet our felt needs. Our needs are met, though, in the humanity and godhead of Jesus Christ. He is constant, He is promised and He promises. The Word is not words on a page, but Jesus – the Word of flesh and blood who came to live among us and radically transformed the entire trajectory of the world and ushered in a new anthropology of humanity!

So when you’re feeling distant from God, don’t fill your life with a band-aid for healing and joy, encounter Jesus. And you can encounter Him IN Scripture – in God’s many promises, in HIS ideas about who you are, not just your own. They will not return void. As Sara sings “it’s time to rediscover the ground that I’ve covered.”

So many people around the world don’t struggle through reading Scripture and falling in love with Jesus …. precisely because they haven’t had the opportunity to even know Him! There are 350 million people in our world today who have NEVER had access to the Word of God in a way that is meaningful to them. We have 500 English translations of the New Testament. Is this fair? Let this fact propel us to encounter Jesus in Scripture that is available to us, and consider our response to the global reality!

“It’s TIME to rediscover all the ground that I’ve covered, like ‘seek ye first’, WHAT a verse!”
